So we have only been in Japan for two days, but so far I'm still loving it. We are staying in a ryokan in takayama...which is a traditional Japanese house. As soon as we walked in, the hosts greeted us warmly. They started frantically brushing the snow off of us and the suitcases (it seems that we have ventured into one one of the biggest snow storms they have ever seen here. Its basically been snowing nonstop for two days. Our train was even delayed by ten minutes if you can believe that such a thing could happen in Japan.) so we walk in and have to take off our shoes and switch into slippers...I was cool with that. We get upstairs and have to switch slippers again to get into the room....ok...then I wanted to go into the bathroom..MORE SLIPPERS. At this point I really have to pee...so I walk the three steps to the room with the toilet...ANOTHER SET OF SLIPPERS. It took me ten minutes just to get to the toilet. I will send a pic to the Blog...the cleanliness is just unbelievable.
Then we were given some afternoon tea. We had it sitting on the floor and you basically put your legs under the table which has a heated blanket on it. Its so warm and toasty! the tea was amazing...u really don't know what green tea is until you have it like that...it was bright green and foamy and smelled delicious!
Anyway...after exploring in -17 degree celcius weather and a delicious local dinner (which I posted pics of) we came back to our room and our foutons were already laid out on the floor. They're not like foutons in the us...they're basically big fluffy pads on the floor, which itself is covered with tatami mats...not sure what they're made from. These things are awesome...u just breathe better sleeping on the floor!
Anyway...we r going to go to Kyoto tomorrow. This is one of the most concentrated area of world heritage unesco sites...with lots of traditional temples. Will keep you posted!
